Using a Wildcard Certificate: How Does It Work?
If you see yourself making use of multiple subdomain features in the future, investing in a Wildcard SSL could be the way to go. Doing so would not only save you money in the long run -as you wouldn't have to buy multiple certificates later on - but also provide you with a comprehensive management option for all of your subdomains.
It's important to note that - as we suggested above - only specific Wildcard certificates cover multiple domains simultaneously. For the most part, a generic Wildcard SSL certificate will be limited to a single domain with support for unlimited subdomains.
Keep in mind that Wildcard SSL certificates can only secure subdomains on a single level of a domain. If you need to safe-keep multiple levels of subdomains, you'll need to get a Multi-Domain Wildcard SSL or a Business SSL under GeoTrust, Thawte or DigiCert. As Business Wildcard SSL Certificates under GeoTrust, Thawte or DigiCert allow you to secure multiple sub-domain levels under the one wildcard certificate without additional costs.
